Cipherwind locks a file or a message on your phone so you can send it any way you like. Only the person with the passphrase, or the key you locked it for, can open it.
Cipherwind is coming to Google Play. It is the sending companion to Ciphergrove, which keeps files private on your phone.
What it does
Lock a file or a message
Choose a file, or type a message, and set a passphrase (the app can make a strong one for you). Share the locked file in any app: email, chat, cloud storage, a USB stick.
Send the passphrase a different way
The app reminds you to send the passphrase by another route than the file, and can open your messaging app with it ready or set a reminder to delete it in 7 days.
Opens without the app
The person you send it to can open it in this app, in any web browser on the open page (nothing is uploaded), or with the free age command-line tool. A locked file never depends on Cipherwind being around.
The open page is a single file. To check a saved copy, compare its SHA-256 with this one: 7c2f996101261eb25085d59cbe8520b28d5836d9b65b5a0f4d692ef7ae6a1f6c
Lock for a person
Make a key pair on your phone, share the public key, and people lock files for you with no passphrase to pass around. With Pro, lock for saved contacts the same way. An optional lock (phone lock, PIN, password or pattern) protects your keys and contacts inside the app.
Clean before sending
Location, camera, author and similar details are removed from photos (.jpg and .png) and Word, Excel and PowerPoint files before locking. What the picture or document shows does not change.
Send to a nearby phone
Send one file straight to another phone with the app over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, without the internet. Both phones show a code to compare first.
Check and sign
Show a file’s checksums, compare them with one you were given, check a minisign signature, or sign a file yourself.
Take a photo or record a voice note and lock it
The plain copy stays inside the app until it is locked, then it is deleted. It is never put in your gallery.
QR codes, key backup, clipboard
Show a short locked message or a public key as a QR code, scan one in, print a backup sheet of your key, and lock whatever you copied from the quick-settings tile.
Free, with an optional Pro
Cipherwind is free and shows one small banner ad from Google AdMob. Pro, a subscription through Google Play, removes the banner, lets you lock several files at once, and lets you lock for saved contacts. Locking and opening a file, locking a message and making a passphrase stay free for good. If you stop paying, nothing you locked is ever affected: locked files open with any age tool, with or without Pro.
Honest about limits
- No expiry and no recall. There is no server, so once you send a locked file it cannot be taken back or made to expire. The 7-day reminder only helps you remember to delete things.
- No passphrase recovery. The passphrase is not stored anywhere. If it is lost, the file cannot be opened by anyone, including us.
- The weakest link is the passphrase. A short or reused passphrase, or one sent in the same message as the file, makes the lock weak. Use the generator and send it by a different route.
- It cannot protect an opened file. Once someone opens a file, their phone or computer can copy it.
Locked files use the open age format, and signatures use the minisign format, so other tools read them. Please read the Privacy policy and the Terms of use.
