These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Radioactive Coding LLC, an Iowa limited liability company, United States (“we”, “us”) about your use of the Ciphergrove app for Android (the “App”). By installing or using the App you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
1. What the App is
Ciphergrove is a private vault that encrypts files on your own phone. Your files are stored on your device. We do not run an account system and we do not receive your files. Please read our Privacy policy for how data is handled, including how advertising works in the free version.
2. Licence to use the App
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use the App on your devices for your own personal use, under these Terms and the terms of Google Play. We keep all rights in the App that we do not expressly give you. The Ciphergrove name, logo and the App’s code and content belong to us or our licensors. Parts of the App use open-source software under its own licences, which you can see in Settings.
You may not copy, sell, rent or distribute the App, or try to take its source code apart, except where the law allows you to despite this restriction.
3. Free version, ads and subscription
- The App is free to use and shows ads in the free version. Ads are provided by Google.
- You can buy an optional subscription: ad-free, which removes ads, or Ciphergrove Pro, which removes ads and adds the Pro features described on the Pro page. Purchases, billing, renewals, cancellations and refunds are handled by Google Play and are governed by Google Play’s terms and policies. You can manage or cancel your subscription in Google Play at any time. We do not receive your payment details.
- Prices and features can change. If we change the price of a subscription, Google Play will tell you as its rules require.
4. Your files and your responsibilities
- Your files are yours. We do not claim any rights in them. We cannot see, open or recover them.
- You are responsible for your PIN and recovery code. We do not have a copy of either. If you lose both your unlock method and your recovery code, your files cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.
- You are responsible for backups. Make encrypted backups and keep them, and your recovery code, somewhere safe. See Backup & recovery.
- Features that erase data do what they say. If you switch on a feature that locks, hides or erases data, for example a second vault, a folder lock, or a deletion or wipe option, you accept the results. Erased data cannot be restored.
- You are responsible for what you store. You must have the right to store and use your files, and you must not use the App to store or share anything that is illegal. We cannot see your files, so we cannot monitor them.
- Keep your device secure and up to date. The App cannot protect files on a device that is infected or controlled by someone else. See How Ciphergrove protects you for what the App does and does not protect against.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to: use the App for any unlawful purpose; try to interfere with or break the App’s security or the services it uses; use the App in a way that harms others; or help anyone else do these things.
6. Third-party services
The App works with services we do not control, including Google Play, Google’s advertising services, your phone’s operating system, and websites you visit in the built-in browser. Those services have their own terms and policies. We are not responsible for them or for the content of websites you visit.
7. No warranty
To the fullest extent the law allows, the App is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or that the App will be error-free, uninterrupted, or secure against every threat. We have worked to build the App carefully, but no software is perfect, and files can be lost for reasons such as device failure, software bugs, or a lost PIN and recovery code.
8. Limit of our liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of data, files, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of the App. Our total liability to you for any claim related to the App is limited to the amount you paid for the App in the 12 months before the claim arose. If you only used the free version, that amount is zero.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or any rights you have under consumer-protection laws where you live that cannot be changed by agreement.
9. Ending your use
You may stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it. Uninstalling or clearing the App’s data deletes the vault from your device. We may stop offering the App or suspend access to parts of it, for example if the law requires it or if you break these Terms. Sections that by their nature should continue (such as 4, 7, 8 and 11) continue after you stop using the App.
10. Changes
We may update the App and these Terms. If we change the Terms in a significant way, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, tell you in the App or in the store listing. If you keep using the App after a change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms.
11. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Iowa, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Iowa, except where the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your own courts or requires that your local law apply.
12. Age
The App is not designed for children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). If you are below the age of legal majority where you live, use the App only with a parent or guardian’s permission.
