Cipherwind Terms of use

Last updated: November 1, 2026

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Radioactive Coding LLC, an Iowa limited liability company, United States (“we”, “us”) about your use of the Cipherwind app for Android (the “App”) and the Cipherwind open page on this website. By installing or using the App you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

1. What the App is

Cipherwind locks files and messages on your own phone so you can send them, and opens locked files and messages. Locking and opening happen on your device. We do not run an account system and we do not receive your files, messages or passphrases. Please read our Privacy policy for how data is handled, including advertising and purchases.

2. Licence to use the App

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use the App on your devices for your own personal use, under these Terms and the terms of Google Play. We keep all rights in the App that we do not expressly give you. The Cipherwind name, logo and the App’s code and content are ours or our licensors’. Locked files and signatures the App makes use open formats (age and minisign), and you may open them with any tool that supports those formats.

You may not copy, sell, rent or distribute the App, or try to take its source code apart, except where the law allows you to despite this restriction.

3. Free version, ads and subscription

  • The App is free to use and shows a banner ad in the free version. Ads are provided by Google.
  • You can buy an optional subscription: ad-free, which removes the banner, or Pro, which removes the banner and lets you lock several files at once and lock for saved contacts. Purchases, billing, renewals, cancellations and refunds are handled by Google Play and are governed by Google Play’s terms and policies. You can cancel at any time in Google Play.
  • Locking and opening a file, locking a message and making a passphrase stay free. If a subscription ends, nothing you locked is affected: locked files open with any age tool, with or without a subscription.
  • Prices and features can change. If we change the price of a subscription, Google Play will tell you as its rules require.

4. Your files, passphrases and responsibilities

  • Your files are yours. We do not claim any rights in them. We cannot see, open or recover them.
  • The passphrase is your responsibility. It is not stored anywhere and we do not have a copy. If it is lost, the locked file or message cannot be opened by anyone, including us. Keep a copy until the file has been delivered and opened.
  • Sending is final. The App has no server, so once you send a locked file or message it cannot be recalled, deleted from someone else’s device or made to expire. The reminder the App offers only helps you remember to delete your own copies.
  • How you share the passphrase matters. A locked file is only as private as its passphrase. Send the passphrase by a different route than the file, and use a strong one (the App can generate one). If both travel together, anyone who gets one gets both.
  • Check who you are talking to. When you send to a nearby phone, compare the code shown on both phones. When you lock for a person, make sure you have their real public key, by a route you trust.
  • You are responsible for what you lock and send. You must have the right to use and send your files, and you must not use the App to send anything illegal. We cannot see your files, so we cannot monitor them.
  • Keep your device secure and up to date. The App cannot protect a file on a device that is infected or controlled by someone else, and it cannot protect a file after someone has opened it.
  • Removing hidden details is best effort. The App removes the details it recognises from the file types it supports and tells you what it removed. It does not clean other file types, and it cannot promise that a file contains no identifying information. Check anything sensitive yourself.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to: use the App for any unlawful purpose; try to interfere with or break the App’s security or the services it uses; use the App to harm, harass or defraud others; or help anyone else do these things.

6. Third-party services

The App works with services we do not control, including Google Play, Google’s advertising services, Google Play services (nearby sending and the code scanner), your phone’s operating system and its camera, messaging and calendar apps, and the websites and tools you use to send and open files. Those services have their own terms and policies. We are not responsible for them.

7. No warranty

To the fullest extent the law allows, the App and the open page are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or that the App will be error-free, uninterrupted, or secure against every threat. We do not promise that a locked file cannot be opened by someone who obtains your passphrase or key, or by someone with enough resources to guess a weak passphrase. Please check anything important yourself.

8. Limit of our liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of data, files, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of the App. Our total liability to you for any claim related to the App is limited to the amount you paid for it in the 12 months before the claim, or US$10 if you paid nothing.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or any rights you have under consumer-protection laws where you live that cannot be changed by agreement.

9. Ending your use

You may stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it. Uninstalling or clearing the App’s data deletes your key and settings from your device, so back up your private key first if you still need it. We may stop offering the App or suspend access to parts of it, for example if the law requires it or if you break these Terms. Sections that by their nature should continue (such as 7, 8 and 11) continue after you stop using the App.

10. Changes

We may update the App and these Terms. If we change the Terms in a significant way, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, tell you in the App or in the store listing. If you keep using the App after a change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Iowa, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Iowa, except where the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your own courts or requires that your local law apply.

12. Age

The App is not designed for children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). If you are below the age of legal majority where you live, use the App only with a parent or guardian’s permission.
